The 16th Society of Petroleum Engineers Middle East Oil & Gas Show and Conference (MEOS 2009) concluded on 18 March 2009 having attracted a total of 6,329 trade visitors and conference delegates from around the world.
The 14,000 square metre event covered all areas of the oil and gas industry. Group pavilions from Italy, North America and the UK participated at MEOS 2009, contributing to a total of 290 exhibiting companies from 32 countries
Flagship stands were taken by GCC national oil companies including Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO), Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC), Qatar Petroleum (QP) and the Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco). They were joined by major international technology suppliers and operators such as Baker Hughes, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Schlumberger and Weatherford amongst others in addition to smaller specialist suppliers and distributors.
His Excellency Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Advisor to His Highness the Prime Minister of Bahrain for Industrial and Oil Affairs, performed the official exhibition opening ceremony accompanied by an entourage of ruling family members, ministers, and senior international industry leaders, during which he recognised the importance of MEOS in helping to disseminate experience, innovation and technology.
The Society of Petroleum Engineers Conference
The Conference Programme Committee produced a technical programme of 145 paper and poster sessions. These were delivered over 31 sessions related to reservoir management, modelling and characterisation; field development; drilling and workover technologies; advanced production technologies; smart wells and fields; gas technology; exploration and appraisal; data management, HR and HSE.
Keynote presentations on the conference theme People, Demand, Technology – Bridging the Gaps were presented by senior figures in the oil industry at the conference opening session on 15 March 2009.
Following addresses by Bahrain’s Minister of Oil & Gas Affairs and Chairman of the National Oil & Gas Authority His Excellency Dr. Abdulhussain bin Ali Mirza and the 2009 Society of Petroleum Engineers President Leo Roodhart, the speakers included:

Other highlights during the course of the conference included a one day workshop on 15 March entitled Equal Opportunities in a Collaborative Environment - Let’s Make it a Reality. Organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and hosted by Bapco with the support of key regional and international E&P players, it focused on current issues facing female professionals and how to capitalise on women as a major human resource to support the developments of the energy sector.
